Should Smoking Be Banned - 2248 Words
Smoking was first used for medicinal purposes in the early 1600ââ¬â¢s. As time continued tobacco began to be smoked through pipes and eventually became rolled in paper and tobacco leaves. After smoking started becoming mainstream, people began to think of this as a social way to fit in rather than thinking of the effects it can cause to their bodies. Although the harmful side effects of smoking are now public knowledge, people still continue to smoke. Smoking can cause health issues, not only to those who partake but those who are around it. By banning smoking I believe it is a great way to start helping todayââ¬â¢s society on a path that will lead to a better future. Smoking can be very harmful to the body and it is one of the major reasons why I believe that it should be banned. It is known to cause cancer and also heart diseases. If the heart is affected, it can cause the oxygen to slow downs through the body. This makes it harder for the blood to flow to through body and some body parts wonââ¬â¢t get enough oxygen. The Simpsons an Imperfect Ideal Family Free Essays
The Simpsons: An Imperfect Ideal Family The essay The Simpsons: An Imperfect Ideal Family was a paper written by Eliezer Van Allen explaining how the popular T. V show The Simpsons was not so unrealistic and impractical as many Americans had thought it to be. In fact, The Simpsons was, more or less, a ââ¬Å"ââ¬Å"cracked-mirror versionâ⬠of our own imperfect but lovable selvesâ⬠just in a cartoon, sitcom type form. We will write a custom essay sample on The Simpsons: an Imperfect Ideal Family or any similar topic only for you Order Now This essay talks about how The Simpsons family often reflects the way many current families live and how, although many individual characteristics in a family member may not always be the best, as a whole a family will often come together and help one another constructing a strong family bond. Although Van Allen over exaggerates the obstacles of the everyday life, he refers to The Simpsons as a ââ¬Å"nuclearâ⬠resemblance of the typical 20th century family. Throughout the essay, Van Allen often uses many literary techniques/ rhetorical devices to help the reader understand the effectiveness of the piece. Humour is used when Van Allen makes a personal connection to the fact that at the beginning of each Simpsons episode, the Simpsons family all run to the couch and sit in their ââ¬Å"specificâ⬠spot, just like his own. He refers to this as a ââ¬Å"mirror image of my couch-dwelling familyâ⬠. Having this humour presented in the essay allows for the reader to stay attentive and wanting to read more, as humour often keeps the reader interested. This often allows for the reader to have more of a connection with the author and to get more of a feel of what the authors thinking process is. Allegory is present throughout the essay as Bert and Lisaââ¬â¢s everyday behaviour allegorically teaches the lessons of the average American. For instance, in ââ¬Å"Bart Sells His Soulâ⬠love and concern is shown by Lisaââ¬â¢s actions as she cares for him and always has his back. This contributes to the effectiveness of the piece because although many family members (individually) may not always be the best and act to their morals, as a family, everyone works together and helps each otherââ¬â¢s weaknesses become strengths and will grow off the strengthens of one another, creating a family, as outlined by Richard Corliss, ââ¬Å"they stick together with one another through thick and thinâ⬠. As a reader, this is thought to give the essay ââ¬Å"personalityâ⬠and with that comes good T. V reviews as viewers become attached and are able to relate to their own family/ real life scenarios. Periodic sentence is present when Van Allen refers to Matt Groening, The Simpsons creator, when he states ââ¬Å"I knew that other kids were going to get serious and go on and be professionalâ⬠¦ I never wanted to go to an office and carry a briefcaseâ⬠, as it is only clear at the end of the sentence what Groening meant by that. He knew that ââ¬Å"carrying a briefcaseâ⬠wasnââ¬â¢t for him so he created a new way to express his talents and his passions. This contributes to the effectiveness of the piece because it forces the reader to keep reading to find out what the author was trying to say, and without doing so the main point of what the author is trying to get across is confusing and may often be misunderstood. Throughout the essay many literary terms/ rhetorical devices are present; these are just a few of many that really stuck out to me. Before reading Van Allenââ¬â¢s paper, I had never thought of The Simpsons in the way he had portrayed it, or the way Groening explained the story behind it. It wasnââ¬â¢t until fully reading and understanding Van Allenââ¬â¢s essay that I started to click into the logic behind the mirror image ideology that The Simpsons family portrayed of the typical 20th century American family. I felt that throughout the essay Van Allen supported his point of how The Simpsons portrayed the average 20th century family very well. He made a lot of personal connections that both any reader and I could easily relate too. For example, he talked about how The Simpsons was ââ¬Å"thatâ⬠T. V show for him and his family that they felt was the mirror-image of their family life. How they all ran to the T. V to watch The Simpsons episode that was coming on next, just how The Simpsons family does at the beginning of each episode. He also talked about how now a days, individual family members donââ¬â¢t always act appropriate and may have some horrible individual traits, from Bartââ¬â¢s rebelliousness, to Homerââ¬â¢s stupidity and foolishness, but as a group and family together they make the best come out in each other. No family has perfect kids or perfect parents but itââ¬â¢s the love and care that one another share, that matters most. This is taught throughout Van Allenââ¬â¢s essay about The Simpsons family in comparison to the average family now a day. To me, family means to always be there for another and always have each others back. Unlike friends, you canââ¬â¢t choose your family. You know that as much as they might get on your nerves sometimes, you must look past that, and find the good in what you are blessed with. While reading Van Allenââ¬â¢s essay I felt that I could relate to a lot of what he was saying and found it very easy to understand what he was trying to get across, which kept me wanting to read more. I strongly agree with Van Allenââ¬â¢s point on how The Simpsons is a character formatted sitcom version of the typical 20th century family. Overall, reading this essay has made me think about how much more relatable and relevant some of shows on T. V actually are. Every time I turn on the T. V and go to watch a sitcom type show especially, it makes me think about any possible story line or lesson that may be hidden behind the show that may benefit me in any way. Van Allenââ¬â¢s essay has made me truly appreciate the hard work and effort gone into such a show, as The Simpsons would have been the last show I would have thought to have a message behind it. All in all, Van Allen`s essay has given T. V shows a whole new outcome, as in how they are looked upon and I am more understanding of the meanings behind the ââ¬Å"hidden messagesâ⬠in our simple day to day shows. Taming Temper Tantrums Essay Example For Students
Taming Temper Tantrums Essay Tantrums are a normal part of growing up. Toddlers arent bad when they are having a tantrum, they are just acting their age. Almost all children between the ages of one and three have a few temper tantrums. This just means they have finally gotten a sense of their own individuality. A temper tantrum every now and then doesnt mean anything; there are bound to be some frustrations. A surprising number of tantrums are a result of fatigue and hunger, or of putting a child into a situation that exceeds their capabilities for coping. I wish I could give you one surefire way to help eliminate or eleviate tantrums, but I cant. Like most of the more challenging behaviors of childhood, this to will pass. Ive provided some suggestions to help minimize tantrums. Nothing accelerates the intensity of a tantrum more than a worked up parent. Seeing you lose your cool will only make it more difficult for your toddler to compose himself. Screaming over your toddlers screams will only encourage your toddler to scream louder. A gentle tone of voice assures your toddler that you are in control. Resorting to physical punishment to end a tantrum is a bad idea. You would only be punishing your child for something that they cant control. You also could lose yourself and inflict serious anger on your child. Protect your toddler from dangerous surroundings. Move the child who is physically out of control to a setting that is safer for everyone and everything. Some children can be easily distracted during a tantrum while others only g et more upset. If your child can be distracted, try reading a favorite book or turn on a favorite song. Speak at your toddlers level. It can be very intimidating to a young child to have a bigger person standing over them while they have lost control of themselves. Sitting on the floor will help to even out the situation, making it easier to communicate with your child. Often the best course of action, is no action at all. Continue to go about your business making a very conscious effort to ignore the situation. Eventually your toddler will realize that its just no fun to get worked up when no one is watching. Obviously, ignoring a tantrum is not a feasible option while you are in a store or public place. See below for more information on how to handle a public tantrum. For some children, especially the older ones, a time out provides a much needed cooling off period. This will give them the composure that they need to take control of themselves and the situation. As much as we all dread the thought of a public tantrum (and it happens to the best of us!) they will inevitably happen at one time or another. Here are some tips on how to handle the situation. Avoid public outings when your toddler is especially prone to having a tantrum. A hungry, tired, bored or overextended child is a recipe for disaster. Praise your child for good behavior whenever you come home from a tantrum free trip. While out in public and you can sense a tantrum in the making, try a quick change of subject. If distraction isnt the key, try moving your toddler to a more private place. Pick him up firmly, not violently, and carry him elsewhere. Going outside or to a bathroom should work. If your toddler is used to a time out, give her one now. Just because you are in public doesnt mean you should change your discipline behavior. If you dont follow through with the same discipline as you would in a more private place this will only encourage your child to misbehave in public more often. Your child should be kept on track with firmness, consistency and more importantly, love. Losing the War on Drugs essays
Losing the War on Drugs essays America is spending millions of dollars to run ad campaigns with teenage waifs smashing up the kitchen with frying pans, brain fried egg commercials, and other inaccurate and misleading ads put fear into our nations youth and adults alike. One such ad showed a flat line brain scan purportedly hooked up to a drug user. It was later proven that it was hooked up to nothing and most of our nations kids now know it. Seeing the "Land of the Free" turn into a nation that imprisons more of its citizens than any other industrialized nation on earth is neither effective or a good message to send our children. We are building 9 new prisons for every one new university( ). Which do you want built for your children? In this country, we are locked in war we simply cannot win. We strive to protect over 10,000 miles of border, against enemies who are driven by the lure of an obscene really resulted from this war is the overcrowding of prisons, the expansion of law and distrust. If its not obvious already, I am referring to the war on drugs. As time goes on, it becomes more and more evident that the war on drugs is as useless as officials, who use the war as a reelection tool. To study this problem, I visited government web pages for statistics and facts dealing with the war, and was surprised what I found. To most people the fiscal reasons for ending the war are the most convincing. For example, it costs over $30,000 per year to house a prisoner - this does not include processing and legal fees, only the actual prison costs - food, water, electricity and guards ( ). There are over 1.5 million non-violent drug law offenders in prison right now, and this number is increasing daily( ). That means we are spending a minimum of $45 billion per year keeping former tax-paying citizens, most of whom had jobs and were contributing to the economy in some way, locked up with murderers and rapists. When these pe...

Complete List of 100+ Free Online High Schools
Complete List of 100+ Free Online High Schools SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Online high schools can be a way for students to take high school classes and graduate at theirown pace, without having to adhere to strict schedules and the distractions of a traditional school. So if you feel that an in-person school isn't right for you for whateverreason, an online school might be the perfect fit. Weââ¬â¢ll give you a list of all the (tuition free!) online high schools available in the United States, as well as how they work, and how and why an online high school could be right for you. So let's get started! What Is an Online High School? Anonline high school is any school that teaches and takes place virtually, rather than in-person. Some online high schools are hybrid programs where students must spend a portionof their time in a physical location, but a fully online high school program takes place completelyvirtually. Students in completeonlineprograms do not go to a physical building to learn each day, but instead are allowed to learn in any place with an internet connection, takingcourses online and typically interacting with their teachers via virtual classrooms, through email, and/or over the phone. A typical school day for students enrolled in online high schools is much like a typical day for other public school students, with about 5-6 hours spent learning and engaging in classwork, and additional time spent on homework. So, although studentscan generally set their own schedules with an online school, the amount of time required for coursework and studies remainsthe same whether the school takes place online or in person. In addition to the standard coursework, many online high school programs offer school activities, trips, contests, and virtual clubs to help students interact and get to know one another. So online students can often reap many of the same the benefits they could get from an in-person school, with all the additional perks of attending school online. Different Types of OnlineHigh Schools Just like physical schools, online highschools can be divided into two broad categories of public and private schools. And just like physical schools, the differences between the two types can be broken down like so: Online publichighschools(which can also becharter schools) use state-licensed and certified teachers, charge NO tuition, follow state education standards, and award you with a legal high school diploma upon completion of the required credits and courses. These schools are government funded, just like physical public schools. Online private high schools follow their own education requirements and standards (rather than state standards),charge tuition, and will ultimately award you with a high school diploma once you have completed the program. These schools are privately funded, just like with physical private schools. Whether private or public, manyonline schools require theirstudents to be a resident of the state or a particular school district, while other schools accept studentswho live inany stateor school district (or students who have no fixed address). If you're thinking about enrolling in an online public school, you may want to think about whether these reasons apply to you and your circumstances. Schedule and Study Flexibility Taking courses online, rather than in person, allows students to set their own study schedules. So long as you engage in the school program for the necessary number of hours per week and complete your assignments, most programs allow you to study when and where you want. So if you're someone who hasan outside interestthattakes considerable time and needs to be scheduled arounddedicated athletes, artists, peopleworking full time, or anyone else who has tocommithours outside of school every weekattending high school online can give you the necessary flexibility to balance school with your other activities. Can Set Your Own Learning Pace Online high schools allow students to learn at their own pace, whether that pace is faster or slower than that of a typical physical public school.Because the courses in an online program are self-directed, this allows students to settheir own learning speed, rather than feeling frustrated that aclass is going too fast or too slow based on the needs of a whole group ofstudents. So if you are an academic achiever who wants to get ahead of your grade/age level, or are someone who is falling behind academically and need to slow down from your grade/age level, an online high school experience might be the right fit for you. Can Study From Home or on the Move There are an endless variety of reasons why taking classes and studying from home may be preferableto taking classes at a physical school. For these people, taking classes online is the perfect way to stay in school without being beholden to attending school physically. Perhaps you have a family that frequently moves and so cannot stay in one place for long enough to attend aphysical school. Perhaps you are someone who doesn't have easy access to a physical school or feels that nearby schools are unsuitable for whatever reason.Or perhaps you aresomeonewitha chronic medical condition or someone who needs to be otherwise home bound. Whatever the reason you may find taking classes from home is more suitable than taking classes outside the home, online high schools can provide the accommodationand adaptability that so many students need to complete their studies An Option for Teenagers or Adults Who Never Finished High School On average, people who receivea high school diploma earnmore than those who receivea GED. So, if you're someone who never attended or completed high school for any reason, you might think about earning an official diploma rather than testing out for your GED. An online high school program could be the right fit for you if younever completed high school, butstill want the complete high school experienceandan accredited diploma to show for it. What's Next? Critical perspectives Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Critical perspectives - Essay Example Thus, conjuring perspectives in social and economic programs have continuously battled through time. In this regard, we see that many aspects of economic, political, social, and cultural motivations underpin the processes of the societyââ¬â¢s development. Changing political and social approaches is thus fundamental to forming new economic platforms and social goals. In Freefall (2010), Stiglitz re-establishes the ââ¬Ëgovernment-interventionââ¬â¢ approach (see Keynes 1926) to market economy by criticizing the current malfunctions of economic trend present in America and subsequently in most parts of the world. In his book, Stiglitz (2010) was able to illustrate the risks and failures that the ââ¬Ëfree-market economyââ¬â¢ (Smith 1776) encounters. Stiglitz (2010) enumerated the downfall of many aspects of social welfare, particularly the conditions of inequalities, by referring to many examples of the imbalances of power in the economic and political realms of the society . Freefall (2010) uncovers the allegedly ill-founded traditions of economic practices in America and other affected countries in the international arena. The book suggests change in approach and perspective in determining the more suitable policies towards economic stability and development. In this paper, a critical discussion of Stiglitzââ¬â¢s (2010) analysis of the present economic situations as drawn from the Great Recession in America will be presented. In line with this, the opposing arguments of the free-market and government-intervention economic perspectives will be examined in order to understand better the background of Stiglitzââ¬â¢s essay. Moreover, looking at the backdrop of the practiced economic programs, the effects of such accounts on the local and international conditions will also be talked about. In here, the influences of globalization movement will be substantiated and analyzed in terms of its effect in the local and international social welfare and econ omic status. The effects of the discussed perspectives in relation to culture and society will be considered. In addition, a discussion of the moral and ethical conditions underlying the issues will be examined. Thus, in this paper, a critical exploration of the perspectives involved in the matter will be done in order to see the significant points Stiglitz suggests in his essay. The Old and the New Economy In Freefall, Stiglitz (2010) emphasizes the grave conditions of world economy as a misleading approach to economic policies continues to prevail in the United States and subsequently in peripheral countries particularly in Asia. The Great Depression and the more recent Great Recession in the United States have tremendously shown how the local and global economy was constructed on a ââ¬Ësinkingââ¬â¢ foundation (Stiglitz 2010). Stiglitz profoundly highlights the ill-conditions of some of the biggest international organizations facing economic retaliation namely the United Sta tes Treasury and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The long-practiced economic advocacy echoing Adam Smithââ¬â¢s laissez faire tremendously affects the world political-economic trends in history primarily through the said international organizations. In this regard, the political underpinnings of the world economic framework are apparently magnetized by the free-market policies. This
